PKR edges up against USD

April 08, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) witnessed a slight uptick in Wednesday’s interbank trading, strengthening by 1.28 paisa to end the session at PKR 279.05 per USD, marginally higher than the previous close of 279.06.

During the session, the currency fluctuated within a narrow band, touching an intraday high (bid) of 279.10 and a low (ask) of 279.05.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 279.00 for buying and PKR 280.10 for selling.

Against major international currencies, however, the rupee showed a weakening trend. It depreciated by Rs3.72, or 1.16%, versus the euro to settle at 326.13 compared to 322.40 a day earlier.

Similarly, the local unit lost Rs4.82, or 1.31%, against the British pound, closing at 374.45 compared to 369.62 in the previous session.

The rupee also declined against the Swiss franc, shedding Rs4.92 or 1.41% to end at 354.04.

Against the Japanese yen, the currency weakened by 1.60 paisa, or 0.92%, to close at 1.7627 compared to 1.7467 a day ago.

Likewise, the rupee lost 22.17 paisa, or 0.55%, against the Chinese yuan to settle at 40.88 from 40.65.

Against the Saudi riyal, the local unit slipped by 2.43 paisa to 74.36, while it recorded a slight gain of 0.35 paisa versus the UAE dirham to close at 75.98.

On a broader scale, the rupee has appreciated by Rs4.71, or 1.69%, against the US dollar during the current fiscal year, while it has gained Rs1.07, or 0.38%, so far in the current calendar year.

Meanwhile, in the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates declined by 18 basis points to 11.36% and 11.61%, respectively.
