PKR closes stronger at PKR 277.9 against USD

July 23, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee remained broadly stable against the US dollar on Thursday, ending the interbank session marginally stronger at PKR 277.90 per USD, up 1.18 paisa from the previous close.

During the trading session, the local currency moved within a narrow range, touching an intraday high of PKR 277.95 and a low of PKR 277.90 against the greenback.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the US dollar at PKR 278.80 for buying and PKR 279.00 for selling.

Among other major currencies, the rupee lost 30.61 paisa (0.10%) against the euro, which settled at PKR 317.32, compared to PKR 317.02 a day earlier.

Against the British pound, however, the local unit advanced 23.81 paisa (0.06%) to end at PKR 371.51, while it also appreciated by Rs1.21 (0.35%) versus the Swiss franc, closing at PKR 340.96.

The rupee strengthened against the Japanese yen as well, gaining 0.38 paisa (0.22%) to settle at PKR 1.7009, compared to PKR 1.7047 in the previous session.

Meanwhile, the domestic currency slipped 2.64 paisa (0.06%) against the Chinese yuan, ending the day at PKR 41.05 versus PKR 41.02 previously.

The rupee also recorded gains against regional currencies, appreciating by 1.11 paisa against the Saudi riyal to PKR 74.04, while edging up 0.12 paisa against the UAE dirham to PKR 75.67.

Since the start of the current fiscal year, the rupee has appreciated 25.93 paisa (0.09%) against the US dollar. On a calendar-year basis, it has strengthened by Rs2.22, reflecting a gain of 0.80%.

In the money market, the benchmark six-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates rose by 9 basis points to 11.51% and 11.76%, respectively.
