PKR rally hits 141 straight gains against USD

April 17, 2026 (MLN): Extending its remarkable streak, the Pakistani rupee (PKR) recorded its 141st consecutive session of appreciation against the US Dollar in Friday’s interbank market, with the last unchanged session noted on September 24, 2025.

The currency gained 3.11 paisa during the day to settle at 278.92, compared to the previous close of 278.95 

During intraday trading, the local currency recorded a high (bid) of 279.10 and a low (ask) of 278.90, indicating relatively stable movement throughout the session.

In the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at 279.55 for buying and 280.00 for selling, showing a minor premium over interbank rates.

The PKR showed mixed performance against global currencies. It slightly weakened against the Euro, depreciating by 0.52 paisa to close at 328.64.

However, the rupee strengthened against the British Pound, gaining 62.79 paisa (0.17%) to settle at 377.09, compared to 377.72 in the previous session.

Against the Swiss Franc, the local unit slipped by 0.58 paisa to close at 356.06.

Meanwhile, the rupee appreciated against the Japanese Yen by 0.23 paisa (0.13%) to settle at 1.7515. It also gained 4.64 paisa (0.11%) against the Chinese Yuan, closing at 40.86.

The local currency recorded marginal gains against regional currencies, rising 0.13 paisa versus the Saudi Riyal to 74.35, and appreciating 0.84 paisa against the UAE Dirham to close at 75.94.

On a cumulative basis, the rupee has strengthened by 4.84 against the US dollar during the current fiscal year, showing an appreciation of 1.74%.

On a calendar year basis, the PKR has gained 1.20, translating into a 0.43% increase.

In the money market, benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer rates edged up by 4 basis points, settling at 11.25% and 11.50%, respectively, indicating a slight tightening in short-term liquidity conditions.
