PKR advances again, sustains recovery trend

April 21, 2026 (MLN): The Pakistani rupee (PKR) continued its upward trajectory against the US dollar, posting gains in Tuesday’s interbank session and extending its ongoing appreciation trend.

The local currency strengthened by 0.90 paisa to close at PKR 278.90 per USD, compared to the previous session’s closing of PKR 278.91.

During intraday trading, the rupee touched a high (bid) of 278.95 and a low (ask) of 278.90 against the greenback.

Meanwhile, in the open market, exchange companies quoted the dollar at PKR 278.90 for buying and PKR 279.95 for selling.

Against major international currencies, the rupee showed mixed performance.

It depreciated by 7.30 paisa versus the euro, settling at PKR 328.07 compared to PKR 328.00 in the previous session.

However, the local unit posted gains against the British pound, appreciating by 12.38 paisa (0.03%) to close at PKR 376.39.

The rupee weakened against the Swiss franc, losing 85.69 paisa (0.24%) to settle at PKR 357.50.

On the other hand, it strengthened against the Japanese yen by 0.16 paisa (0.09%), closing at PKR 1.7522.

Against regional currencies, PKR slipped by 2.11 paisa versus the Chinese yuan to close at PKR 40.92.

It also edged lower against the Saudi riyal by 0.15 paisa to PKR 74.36, while posting a marginal gain of 0.25 paisa against the UAE dirham to settle at PKR 75.93.

From a broader perspective, the rupee has appreciated by PKR 4.86 (1.74%) against the US dollar so far in the current fiscal year.

On a calendar year basis, it has gained PKR 1.22, reflecting a 0.44% increase.

In the money market, benchmark 6-month Karachi Interbank Bid and Offer Rates eased slightly, declining by 1 basis point to 11.21% and 11.46%, respectively.

The continued appreciation trend suggests improving sentiment in the foreign exchange market, supported by relatively stable external inflows and controlled demand for the dollar.
