Nissan accelerates AI adoption

April 14, 2026 (MLN):  Nissan Motor Co. plans to integrate artificial intelligence–powered autonomous driving systems into 90% of its future vehicle lineup, as part of a broader effort to reverse declining sales.

The next-generation technology is set to debut by the end of fiscal 2027, first appearing in the company’s upcoming large minivan, the Elgrand, which is expected to launch this summer, APP reported.

As part of a wider restructuring of its global strategy, Nissan aims to significantly boost sales by fiscal 2030, targeting 550,000 units in Japan and 1 million vehicles each in the United States and China.

For fiscal 2025, the company forecasts sales of 420,000 units in Japan, 653,000 in China, and 1.3 million vehicles in North America.

To streamline operations, Nissan plans to reduce its model lineup from 56 to 45 vehicles. It also revealed a pipeline of new models, including a hybrid version of the X-Trail SUV and a fully electric variant of the Juke.

The restructuring effort includes major cost-cutting measures, such as closing seven production plants in Japan and overseas  among them the Oppama facility in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture  and reducing its workforce by approximately 20,000 employees.
