October 13, 2025 (MLN): Artificial intelligence is transforming the podcasting landscape, enabling the mass production of shows with entirely virtual hosts a shift that’s disrupting an industry still built on fragile business models, reported APP.
Since Google introduced Audio Overview, the first
mass-market podcast generator that creates programs from documents and other
text inputs, several startups including ElevenLabs and Wondercraft have entered
the field.
These AI tools can produce complete, conversational
podcasts no studio, no recording, and no human hosts required.
A leading player, Inception Point AI, founded in
2023, produces around 3,000 podcasts weekly with just eight employees.
Founder Jeanine Wright said the company focuses on high
volume, with each episode costing only a dollar to make and turning a profit
with as few as 20 listeners.
Automation has lowered advertising thresholds, allowing
even hyper-niche shows such as those on pollen counts in specific cities to
attract sponsors.
While some fear a flood of low quality synthetic content,
Inception discloses AI use in every episode, with minimal listener drop-off.
Wright believes audiences value engaging content over its source, saying, “If
people like the AI host and content, they accept it.”
Experts, however, warn that this boom could make it
harder for independent creators to gain visibility and ad revenue. Martin
Spinelli, a podcast professor at the University of Sussex, said smaller
producers may struggle to stand out without large marketing budgets.
Podcast veteran Nate DiMeo cautioned that even if
listener preferences remain unchanged, an oversupply of AI shows could still
harm the art form, with traditional podcasters “barely managing to stay
afloat.”
Currently, major platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
and YouTube do not require creators to disclose AI-generated content. Spinelli
added that he would “pay for an AI tool” to help filter quality content amid
the noise.
Wright predicts AI-generated podcasts will evolve into their own genre similar to how animation stands apart from live-action film while DiMeo insists that listeners ultimately seek connection with “human consciousness,” something he believes AI can’t replicate.
