August 24, 2026 (MLN): Keti Bunder Port should be developed as part of an integrated infrastructure network, with reliable road connectivity, power and water supplies, industrial infrastructure and other essential facilities.

President Asif Ali Zardari made the remarks during a meeting where China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) presented the proposed development plan for Keti Bunder Port, said a press release issued.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Senators Saleem Mandviwala and Sherry Rehman, Sindh Minister for Energy, P&D Mr Nasir Hussain Shah, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Investment & Public Private Partnership Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar and Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Asif Hyder Shah.

The Chinese delegation comprised Mr Wu Ping, Chief Representative of CHEC in Pakistan, Mr Wang Zongde, Head of Marketing Department and Mr Xu Tielin, Engineer, along with Mr Ali Raza, GM of Strategy and Marketing.

The president said Keti Bunder has the potential to serve as an additional maritime gateway, strengthening Pakistan’s port and logistics network while supporting trade and regional connectivity.

He emphasised the need for close technical coordination between the Chinese company and relevant Pakistani authorities to ensure effective planning and development of the project.

President Zardari also stressed that environmental sustainability should remain a key priority, particularly the protection of the fragile Indus Delta ecosystem and the interests and livelihoods of local fishing communities.

He called for continued technical engagement to refine the port’s master plan and establish an appropriate implementation and financing framework.

The Conceptual Master Plan presented by the Chinese delegation envisages a new deep-water maritime gateway with multiple terminals, logistics facilities and supporting infrastructure.

Phase-I of the proposed project includes a multi-purpose terminal with a 500-metre quay, with preliminary engineering costs estimated at approximately $522.34 million.

President Zardari welcomed the Chinese delegation and appreciated China’s continued interest in supporting Pakistan’s infrastructure and maritime development.
