Karachi jewellers shut markets, stage protest against FBR raids

June 16, 2026 (MLN): Jewellers across Karachi's major commercial areas including Tariq Road, Saddar, and Clifton have shut their shops on Tuesday in protest against what the community termed unlawful raids by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

The shutdown follows an emergency meeting of all Karachi jewellers' associations held on Monday, June 15, at the JAGTAP Association office in Saddar, chaired by All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Association President Qasim Shikarpuri.

The meeting resolved unanimously to observe a complete shutter-down strike on Tuesday, June 16, across all jewellery and bullion markets in the city.

A peaceful protest has also been arranged at Zeebunn Nissa Street at 2pm, with all members of the jewellery and gems trade urged to participate, according to a press release issued.

The jewellers' community maintained that it was actively cooperating with the FBR and fulfilling its tax obligations, even expressing willingness to expand compliance further.

However, traders said the raids were being carried out despite ongoing talks between jewellers and FBR Chairman, and amounted to harassment of a community already engaged in good-faith negotiations.

A press conference is scheduled for 3pm today.
