KPT handles 74,603 tonnes in 24 hours

May 04, 2026 (MLN): Karachi Port Trust (KPT) handled 74,603 metric tonnes of cargo in the 24 hours ending Saturday evening, with containerised trade accounting for the largest share, showing steady maritime activity amid ongoing regional supply chain pressures.

Containerised cargo reached 45,171 tonnes, comprising 19,303 tonnes of imports and 25,868 tonnes of exports, indicated continued export flow through Pakistan’s main seaport.

This was followed by 11,944 tonnes of bulk cargo, 6,114 tonnes of clinker exports, and 10,352 tonnes of liquid cargo, highlighting diversified cargo handling across segments, according to the press release.

Operational activity remained elevated, with 14 vessels berthed at the port as of Saturday morning while seven ships departed during the same period.

Vessel traffic is expected to remain firm, with 19 ships scheduled to arrive, including major container carriers, general cargo vessels, and oil tankers.

The cargo mix underscores the port’s role in facilitating both trade and energy flows, particularly as liquid cargo volumes remain significant amid global oil supply uncertainties.

The presence of ships carrying commodities such as rice, lentils, chemicals, and clinker also points to sustained demand across key export and import categories.

Stable vessel movements and cargo throughput at KPT suggest continuity in Pakistan’s maritime logistics, supporting trade flows and easing pressure on supply chains despite external geopolitical risks.
