March 10, 2026 (MLN): In a significant move to counter global petroleum supply volatility and ease the pressure on national foreign exchange reserves, the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has officially implemented a comprehensive set of fuel conservation and responsible governance measures.

Approved during a provincial cabinet meeting on March 9, 2026, according to a notice issued, these temporary regulations are scheduled to remain in effect for a period of two months.

The primary objective of the policy is to curtail non-essential fuel consumption across the province while simultaneously ensuring that critical economic activities, agricultural productivity, and public mobility during the Eid season remain protected.

The provincial administration is leading the initiative by mandating a 25% reduction in fuel entitlements for official vehicles across all administrative departments.

While essential services such as the police, rescue operations, and field enforcement units are exempt from these cuts to maintain public safety, officers in administrative roles within those departments must still adhere to the new rationing.

Furthermore, the government has moved to a "digital-first" approach, making virtual meetings the default mode of coordination and requiring 100% utilization of the e-Office system to eliminate the need for physical file movement and inter-district travel.

Public sector operations will also shift to a leaner model, with departments instructed to notify duty rosters that include up to 50% work-from-home arrangements where feasible.

To further reduce traffic congestion and fuel waste, the Education Department has been directed to close all public and private schools, colleges, and universities on Fridays and Saturdays for the next two months.

Additionally, the Law Department is coordinating with the Peshawar High Court to transition more legal proceedings to virtual hearings, while other departments may introduce staggered office timings to manage urban traffic flow.

Economic discipline extends to government spending and urban energy use, with a strict ban on the procurement of non-essential furniture and the suspension of official dinners and receptions.

In the commercial sector, district administrations will regulate late-night wedding hall operations and restrict decorative lighting in markets and plazas.

To support the public, the government has prohibited any increases in tolls or public road charges during this period and is coordinating with petroleum authorities to ensure that diesel remains available for vital wheat harvesting operations.

Strict monitoring mechanisms have been established to ensure these directives are followed, with a Provincial Monitoring Desk set up in the Chief Secretary’s Office to review twice-weekly progress reports.

Deputy Commissioners are tasked with daily monitoring of petrol pump stocks to prevent hoarding and black-marketing, with warnings that any misuse of official vehicles or violations of these rules will result in immediate disciplinary action.

This collective effort aims to stabilize the local fuel market and foster institutional leadership through a period of regional economic uncertainty
