Japan pushes for stronger local ties to unlock AI potential in tourism

March 09, 2026 (MLN): Japan’s tourism industry is
looking to harness artificial intelligence (AI) to improve regional tourism,
but building stronger emotional connections with local businesses is the
crucial first step.
It is emphasized that technology alone cannot succeed
without trust and collaboration among local stakeholders.
Fumiaki Kobayashi, chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic
Party’s economy, trade, and industry division, highlighted the need for joint
efforts between the public and private sectors to establish the robust data
infrastructure required for effective AI use, APP reported
Despite AI’s potential, Japan’s adoption rate remains
relatively low, prompting calls for businesses to begin utilizing available
tools.
In Fukui Prefecture, the Fukui Tourism Data Analyzing System
(FTAS) has been deployed to support data-driven decisions aimed at promoting
profitable regional tourism.
The system integrates multiple data sources to visualize
accommodation occupancy up to 90 days in advance, enhancing hotel pricing
strategies and optimizing inventory for local businesses.
However, local authorities faced challenges convincing the
Awara Onsen ryokan association to share data, demonstrating that trust-building
is as important as technological capability.
Current AI applications in tourism include streamlining data
analysis and generating reports using information ranging from museum bookings
to tourism website activity.
With Japan’s working-age population expected to decline
sharply by 2040, policymakers are increasingly focused on using AI to enhance
productivity and improve the quality of visitor experiences, rather than simply
increasing visitor numbers.
Executives in the tourism sector stress that human networks
and hands-on engagement remain indispensable, noting that AI’s effectiveness
depends on the groundwork laid by local residents and businesses.
