Hyundai to green South Korea's Antarctic station

June 19, 2026 (MLN):Hyundai Motor Group is set to deploy a green hydrogen energy system at South Korea's Antarctic research station, replacing diesel generators with a clean power solution designed to support long-term scientific operations in one of the world's most remote environments.

The project, formalized through a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Polar Research Institute, will see the automaker develop an Antarctic-specific hydrogen grid that harnesses surplus solar energy to produce and store hydrogen via water electrolysis.

During periods of limited solar generation, the stored hydrogen will be fed through fuel cells to generate electricity, creating a self-contained clean energy loop, APP reported.

Antarctic research stations have historically depended on diesel generators due to their isolation from external power grids, making the shift to renewable-based hydrogen a significant departure from conventional practice.

Sung Kim, president of Hyundai Motor Co., said the initiative marked a major first step toward the station's transition to clean energy, adding that the collaboration carried particular significance given its alignment with South Korea's carbon neutrality goals.

Oceans Minister Hwang Jong-woo said the project reflected the country's commitment to environmental protection and responsible stewardship of Antarctica, pledging continued efforts to maintain the trust of the international community.
