Hydel output rises to 5,800MW

April 24, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s power demand picked up across the country, while hydropower generation improved during peak hours, supported by higher water releases from Tarbela Dam, the Power Division said on Friday.

According to a spokesperson, total hydel generation reached around 5,800 megawatts during last night’s peak hours, against an installed capacity of approximately 11,500 megawatts.

The increased water outflows from Tarbela played a key role in boosting generation and improving overall grid stability.

In addition, around 500 megawatts of electricity from the southern region was transmitted to the national grid, marking an increase of 100 megawatts compared to April 22.

Despite the improvement in supply, power distribution companies carried out up to two hours of load management during peak hours.

The spokesperson clarified that economic load management on high-loss feeders continues as per policy and is separate from peak-hour load adjustments.

Meanwhile, power plants with a combined capacity of 5,500 megawatts operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) remained offline due to global supply constraints.

The Power Division noted that improved LNG availability, along with sustained water releases, is expected to ease the power shortfall, particularly during night hours.
