Govt vows to keep urea, DAP supplies sufficient for Rabi season

October 21, 2026 (MLN): The government has pledged to keep
adequate stocks of fertilisers, especially urea and DAP, available for farmers
throughout the ongoing Rabi season, and warned that hoarding, artificial
shortages and unjustified price hikes will not be tolerated, with action to be
taken against those manipulating the market.
The commitment came at a meeting of
the Fertilizer Review Committee chaired by Federal Minister for National Food
Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, which assessed fertiliser
availability, market prices, distribution arrangements and supply needs for the
season.
Senior ministry officials and
representatives of the fertiliser industry attended, said a press release
issued.
The minister expressed satisfaction
with the overall supply position and said timely availability of fertilisers
remains a key priority.
The committee went over current
stocks, domestic production, supply chain arrangements and the expected demand
during wheat sowing, while officials briefed the meeting on steps to keep
supply balanced across the country and ensure fertilisers move smoothly to
agricultural markets.
Rana Tanveer Hussain directed the
authorities concerned to tighten market surveillance and stay in close contact
with relevant departments and manufacturers to head off supply disruptions.
He also said fluctuations in global
fertiliser markets and economic uncertainty continue to weigh on input costs,
but the government remains focused on shielding farmers from avoidable
financial pressure and keeping the domestic market stable.
He said farmers are the backbone of
the agricultural economy and that ensuring they get essential inputs at
reasonable prices is the government’s foremost responsibility.
The government, he added, is closely
tracking supplies and will take all necessary steps to protect farmers’
interests.
Stressing the importance of the Rabi
season for national food security, the minister said timely fertiliser
availability is vital to meeting wheat production targets and lifting
productivity.
He called for effective planning,
efficient distribution and coordination among all stakeholders, and directed
that demand and availability be assessed regularly through the season, with
particular focus on major wheat-growing areas.
Any emerging supply constraints, he
said, should be identified and resolved promptly to avoid inconvenience to
farmers.
Representatives of the fertiliser
industry updated the meeting on distribution arrangements and reaffirmed their
commitment to working closely with the federal government to ensure
uninterrupted supplies.
Concluding the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain
reiterated the government’s resolve to ensure fertiliser availability,
discourage market exploitation and support farmers during the Rabi season.
