September 14, 2026 (MLN): The government has declared a special petrol relief scheme offering a discount of Rs100 per litre to motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi rickshaw and small-car users amid a surge in global oil prices triggered by heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Under the scheme, motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi and other two- and three-wheeler users will receive relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month.

Owners of vehicles with engine capacity of up to 800cc will be eligible for relief on up to 30 litres per month.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the scheme would initially be implemented in Islamabad Capital Territory during the night between Monday and Tuesday, before being extended to the rest of the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

Registration for the scheme has commenced, while details of the registration process will be communicated through a public awareness campaign.

The government said the initiative aims to cushion lower-income and small-vehicle users from the impact of higher petroleum prices following the recent escalation in regional tensions and the resulting increase in international oil prices.

The scheme comes as higher global crude prices threaten to increase Pakistan’s petroleum import bill and place additional pressure on domestic fuel prices and inflation.

The government has also sought cooperation from provincial authorities in providing vehicle and user data required for registration under the relief programme.

Earlier, the government had introduced targeted fuel subsidies following a sharp increase in petroleum prices, moving away from blanket subsidies toward a more targeted approach aimed at ensuring relief reaches those most in need.

At the time, the government announced Rs100 per litre in subsidized petrol for motorcycle users on up to 20 litres per month, while truck operators were to receive Rs70,000 in monthly support and public buses Rs100,000 per month.

The earlier measures were also aimed at supporting essential transport segments, with assistance for public buses intended to help prevent fare increases, while railway services were set to be subsidized to keep ticket prices stable.

The government had said the targeted support was part of broader efforts to manage the impact of higher energy costs on essential sectors amid global market pressures.
