September 19, 2025 (MLN): In a significant development for Pakistan's energy sector, the federal government today unveiled an ambitious plan to rapidly expand RLNG-based domestic gas connections across the country, said a press release issued today.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Thursday to finalize the comprehensive rollout strategy, bringing together top officials from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the managing directors of both major gas distribution companies - Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL).

The initiative, described by Minister Malik as a "priority directive from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif," aims to address the mounting public demand for clean and affordable energy alternatives.

The government is positioning RLNG as a game-changer for Pakistani households, with officials citing its 30% cost advantage over LPG and enhanced safety profile.

"This step is being taken to fulfil the long-standing demand of the public for the provision of new domestic gas connections," Malik stated during the meeting. "Shifting to RLNG is not only a move towards energy efficiency but also provides significant economic relief to households."

In a move that signals the government's commitment to transparency and efficiency, the application process will undergo a major overhaul.

Consumers will now be able to apply for connections online through official websites and mobile applications of the Sui companies, alongside traditional office visits - a modernization effort aimed at reducing bureaucratic delays that have historically plagued the sector.

The Minister has directed both gas utilities to establish dedicated Project Management Offices (PMOs) to ensure rigorous oversight of the initiative, from application processing to final connection.

These offices will be tasked with meeting ambitious first-year targets and addressing consumer grievances promptly.

In what appears to be a conciliatory gesture to long-waiting applicants, the government revealed that consumers who have already paid for demand notes can now submit differential amounts along with security fees to qualify for RLNG connections under the new program.

The development comes as Pakistan continues to grapple with energy security challenges and rising household costs.

The government's emphasis on RLNG as both an economic and safety solution suggests this initiative could play a crucial role in the country's broader energy transition strategy.

Officials indicated that a comprehensive media campaign will be launched to inform the public about the new connection process and its benefits, signalling the government's intent to ensure maximum public awareness and participation in what they're describing as a "massive public welfare project."
