Govt plans to modernize pharmacy education, regulation

January 12, 2026 (MLN): The Government of Pakistan is set to review and modernize the Pharmacy Act, while digitalizing the operations of the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan, aiming to align pharmacy education and regulation with international standards.

Federal Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, Syed Mustafa Kamal, held discussions on reforms in pharmacy education, professional training, and regulatory oversight.

The discussions involved the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), including the Director General (Health) and the Director of Pharmacy Services, according to the press release.

The Minister directed the formation of a high-level technical committee to examine the existing legal framework and propose amendments to the Pharmacy Act.

The review aims to ensure pharmacy graduates are trained to meet both national and global healthcare needs, maintain the quality of medicines, enhance patient safety, and uphold professional competence.

In parallel, the Minister instructed the President of the Pharmacy Council to fully digitalize all council functions, a move expected to improve transparency, efficiency, and institutional effectiveness across Pakistan’s pharmacy sector.
