March 27, 2026 (MLN): The government has decided to keep petrol and high-speed diesel prices unchanged, despite recommendations for a substantial increase, in a move aimed at providing relief to consumers amid rising inflation.

Petrol prices were advised to be increased by Rs93 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs203 per litre, showing sharp adjustments based on global oil price trends and exchange rate impact.

However, the government opted against passing on the full burden to the public.

To maintain current fuel prices, the government will absorb a financial impact of approximately Rs56bn for the latest fortnight.

This decision adds to the cumulative fiscal strain, with the total burden borne by the government reaching around Rs125bn.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared on Friday that he had rejected another recommendation for an increase in petrol and HSD prices. He made the declaration during an address to the nation.
