Govt finalizes modalities for export of 200,000 tons surplus sugar

September 30, 2026 (MLN): The government has finalized the modalities for the export of 200,000 metric tons of surplus sugar and approved the formation of a monitoring committee to keep regular checks on sugar prices in the domestic market.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee for the Export of Surplus Sugar, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, according to a press release issued.

The meeting was attended by the Ministers for National Food Security and Climate Change, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Bajwa, the Secretaries of Commerce and National Food Security and Research, and other stakeholders from federal and provincial departments.

Ishaq Dar directed all concerned ministries to speed up the process and clear the pending formalities without delay.

He said the move is meant to support the sugar industry and sugarcane growers and raise foreign exchange earnings, while keeping domestic consumers protected.
