August 20, 2026 (MLN): The government is moving to streamline maritime-sector operations and strengthen fisheries, aquaculture and port infrastructure to unlock greater economic potential, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhary said.
Chairing a review meeting on the
performance of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and its attached departments,
the minister called for simplifying business procedures and ensuring greater
participation of the private sector and other stakeholders in policymaking.
He directed relevant authorities
to incorporate industry recommendations into policies and initiatives
concerning sea-based economic activities, with a focus on improving the ease of
doing business and attracting investment.
Officials informed the meeting
that preparations for a one-window facility, modelled on Khidmat Centres, had
been completed.
The platform will bring multiple
government services under one roof, aimed at reducing procedural hurdles and
facilitating investors and businesses operating in the maritime sector.
The minister also reviewed
progress on a 100-acre off-dock terminal being developed at Gwadar Port. He
said the facility would support trade with the Central Asian Republics and
improve regional cargo and logistics connectivity, further strengthening Gwadar’s
position as a trade gateway for landlocked countries.
The meeting was also briefed on a
$3m project supported by the Global Environment Facility for conserving marine
biodiversity and coastal ecosystems. The initiative includes measures to
promote environmentally sustainable fishing practices.
Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhary
stressed that expansion of the maritime economy should be pursued alongside
protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.
He further called for a
comprehensive strategy to put port land recovered from encroachments to
productive use, saying the land could generate additional economic resources
and support the development of the country’s blue economy.
The minister directed concerned authorities to accelerate ongoing projects, ensure their timely completion and improve coordination among relevant stakeholders.
