Govt ends fuel subsidy plan

June 23, 2026 (MLN): The government has decided to discontinue the fuel subsidy programme for motorcyclists, small farmers, public transport operators, and goods transporters after reviewing the decline in global fuel prices and the relief already passed on to consumers.

The decision was taken during the 7th meeting of the National Steering Committee on Fuel Subsidy, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

According to a statement shared by Ishaq Dar on X, the committee reviewed the implementation of the fuel subsidy scheme across all provinces, as well as in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The committee noted that international fuel prices had declined significantly and that the resulting benefit had already been passed on to consumers. In view of this, the committee agreed to discontinue the subsidy programme, subject to the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

During the meeting, Dar appreciated the work of the committee, marked by sustained interprovincial coordination, and directed that lessons learned from the exercise be documented. He also instructed the relevant authorities to address gaps in data and delivery to strengthen future initiatives with a view to improving public service delivery.

The meeting was attended by SAPM Tariq Bajwa, the federal secretaries of Petroleum and IT, the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, and senior representatives from all provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
