September 06, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has renewed its push for power-sector reforms and privatization, with the government now emphasizing efficiency, institutional effectiveness and better outcomes for electricity consumers.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting of the committee constituted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to review proposed reforms in the power sector.
The committee reviewed progress on the government’s reform and privatization agenda, including institutional strengthening and capacity building across key power-sector institutions.
Dar stressed that the reform process should remain focused on results, consumer interests and the long-term sustainability of the power sector.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Power, Minister for Economic Affairs, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, senior federal officials and representatives from relevant federal and provincial institutions.
The renewed focus on efficiency comes as electricity costs, sector losses and the financial sustainability of the power chain remain major challenges for Pakistan’s economy and businesses.
The government said the ongoing reform process would need to translate into greater institutional efficiency and improved service delivery for electricity consumers.
