September 17, 2026 (MLN): Volatility in international petroleum markets and disruptions in global energy supplies have prompted the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to step up coordination on oil and gas supplies, exploration and production (E&P) security, and the province’s broader energy challenges.
Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Energy and Power Nazir Ahmed Abbasi discussed these
issues during a meeting on Thursday, agreeing to strengthen coordination on
strategic energy matters.
Ali Pervaiz Malik briefed the KP minister on the prevailing
oil supply situation and developments in international petroleum markets,
noting that global market pressures were also affecting Pakistan’s domestic
energy sector, according to APP.
He said the federal government remained committed to
maintaining stable and uninterrupted energy supplies despite external
challenges.
The petroleum minister also said the government, in
coordination with security forces, was developing a comprehensive plan to
improve security for E&P activities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He stressed that a secure operating environment was
necessary to sustain existing exploration activities and attract further
investment into the province’s oil and gas sector.
Nazir Ahmed Abbasi acknowledged the need to resolve security
concerns affecting E&P operations and assured the federal government of the
provincial administration’s full cooperation.
Both sides agreed that closer coordination between the
federal government, security forces and the KP government would be necessary to
establish a secure environment for exploration and production activities.
They noted that greater E&P activity in the province
could help strengthen Pakistan’s domestic energy security while also increasing
royalty revenues for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The KP energy minister highlighted the province’s strong
exploration potential, noting that the success ratio of wells in the province
remained above the global average.
The meeting also discussed gas supply challenges facing
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ali Pervaiz Malik said the ongoing war and disruptions in
international energy markets were putting pressure on gas supplies.
He added that supply and distribution arrangements could be
reviewed once the situation improves and market conditions become clearer.
Nazir Ahmed Abbasi proposed establishing a provincial LPG
company to cater to the energy requirements of people living in hilly and
remote areas, using the 10% LPG quota allocated for such regions under the LPG
Policy.
Officials from the Petroleum Division briefed the meeting on
LPG allocations for hilly and forest areas and assured that detailed
information on allocations and supplies would be provided to the KP government.
Ali Pervaiz Malik directed the relevant Petroleum Division
officials to maintain close coordination with the KP Energy Department and
extend all possible assistance in resolving the province’s energy-related
concerns.
The federal minister further said Prime Minister Muhammad
Shehbaz Sharif had directed the government to facilitate the public and protect
the interests of the state.
He stressed that political differences should not hinder
public welfare and called for collective efforts by all stakeholders to address
issues affecting the people.
Nazir Ahmed Abbasi endorsed the approach, saying the federal
and provincial governments should jointly identify problems and develop
practical solutions to improve conditions for the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of both
governments’ commitment to stronger coordination, increased energy-sector
investment, enhanced security for E&P operations and improved energy access
across the province.
Secretary Energy and Power, Government of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, also attended the meeting.
