From parasols to misting bottles, Japan gears up for summer heat

July 08, 2026 (MLN): Japanese companies are rushing out a new generation of
anti-heat products this summer, moving beyond basic parasols and fans toward
compact, multi-functional gear as forecasters warn of another blistering season
nationwide.
At a Hands Inc. outlet in Tokyo's Shinjuku district, an entire section is
now devoted to heat-countermeasure items, headlined by parasols developed
jointly with Toray Industries Inc.
These use advanced fabric that blocks UV rays while also providing a
cooling, heat-shielding effect. Alongside them sit handheld fans, including a
newly launched ultracompact version small enough to clip directly onto a
parasol, APP reported.
Novelty cooling products are also gaining traction.
Osaka-based Logos Corp. sells an "instant ice stamp" that
freezes a damp towel or handkerchief within one to three seconds of contact.
The product sold out ahead of the summer season when it debuted in 2024,
pushing the company to ramp up production. Demand has stayed strong this year
as well, picking up around the Golden Week holidays in May.
Tokyo-based Daisaku Shoji Ltd., meanwhile, has released the Magicool
Drink Mist, a stainless steel bottle that lets users sip a beverage while
simultaneously misting themselves with water.
Technology firms are joining the effort too.
Navitime Japan Co. added a "Shady Route" feature to its Alkoo
by Navitime walking app, which maps out paths with maximum shade coverage.
A companion feature, "Shady Map," calculates building heights
and the sun's angle to pinpoint shaded spots on a map, an idea born from
engineers at the company who wanted a way to keep walking outdoors despite
extreme heat.
Both features have been recognized for their innovation, including with
an award from a Tokyo metropolitan government competition for
heat-countermeasure products.
