Flash floods ravage Punjab, destroying crops

September 02, 2025 (MLN):  Pakistan’s Punjab province has been hit by flash floods that have wiped out thousands of acres of crops, unleashing a mounting economic and humanitarian crisis.

Preliminary assessments by the Pakistan Business Forum reveal significant losses in the agricultural sector and widespread crop destruction, according to Bloomberg.

Approximately 60% of the rice crops and 30% of sugarcane  in Punjab were lost with assumptions regarding cotton production is that it will also decline by 35% compared to the annual target, as reported by Bloomberg,

Pakistan Business Forum stated that such extensive destruction in Central Punjab has "never been witnessed before" and that Punjab, accounts for 68% of Pakistan's total annual food grain production, and this year's rainfall has been exceptionally heavy.

The floods have displaced two million people and killed more than 850 nationwide, according to Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik.

The country's finance ministry warned that the flood damage will exacerbate existing fiscal pressures and disrupt food supplies.

Furthermore, The Pakistan Meteorological Department anticipates more heavy rain, which will further increase the risk of flooding.
