Finance minister Aurangzeb calls for practical cooperation with ESCAP

October 12, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan has sought technical support
from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
(ESCAP) for disaster preparedness, early-warning systems and the development of
bankable climate projects, with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb naming
climate change and rapid population growth as major challenges.

Under-Secretary-General and ESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Salsiah
Alisjahbana on the sidelines of the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings 2026
in Bangkok, Thailand, where they discussed Pakistan’s economic priorities and
opportunities for cooperation, said a press release issued.
He outlined progress in macroeconomic
stabilisation and stressed the need to preserve these gains through structural
reforms and sustainable, export-led growth.
The discussions also covered digital
skills and employment, sustainable finance, the energy transition and potential
technical assistance for the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
Senator Aurangzeb called for practical
cooperation that turns policy analysis into actionable measures and measurable
results.
