Finance Minister seeks Fitch’s view on requirements for BB category

October 16, 2026 (MLN): Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has briefed Fitch Ratings on Pakistan’s economic performance and sovereign credit outlook, while seeking the agency’s assessment of what is required to move towards the BB rating category.

Senator Aurangzeb and the Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) met Fitch Ratings on the sidelines of the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, said a press release issued.

The finance minister highlighted restored access to international capital markets, fiscal consolidation and sustained primary surpluses.

He outlined trends in inflation, monetary policy, exchange rate stability and the contained current account deficit.

The talks also covered reserve accumulation, reduced forward liabilities and stronger external buffers to withstand economic shocks.

The delegation pointed to improving debt sustainability, declining servicing costs, longer borrowing maturities and bilateral rollover assurances.

It also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the IMF programme, implementing structural reforms and promoting export-led growth.

The finance minister also briefed Fitch on trade and investment engagement with the United States, and sought the agency’s assessment of the requirements for progressing towards the BB rating category.
