March 12, 2026 (MLN): The federal government has officially named Farid Ahmad Tarar as the new chairman of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP).

Tarar brings over 30 years of experience in public financial management, economic governance, and regulatory reforms. He has a distinguished record of working with international development organizations on major reform initiatives in Pakistan.

Throughout his career, Tarar has held key positions, including team leader for the European Union-funded Public Financial Management (PFM) Reform Programme, strategic policy adviser for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)-funded SEED programme, and team leader for a UNICEF-supported project focused on strengthening public financial management systems.

In these roles, he contributed to fiscal policy design, public expenditure reviews, institutional reforms, and revenue mobilization efforts.

Tarar also served as Pakistan’s commercial counsellor in Rome, promoting trade relations with the European Union and actively participating in the process that secured GSP+ trade privileges for Pakistan.

Domestically, he has held senior administrative roles, including Secretary to the Government of Punjab, Finance Secretary of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Member of the Punjab Revenue Authority.

An accomplished academic, Tarar holds a Master’s in Accounting and Finance from Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, UK, as well as an MBA in Finance.

He has authored influential policy documents for development partners, including the Sindh Public Financial Management Reform Strategy and the Sindh Tax Revenue Mobilization Plan.

With his extensive background in public finance and regulatory oversight, Tarar is expected to strengthen the CCP’s role in fostering market competition and economic reforms in Pakistan
