FBR sets up Grievance Committee to oversee prosecution under Sales Tax Act

August 04, 2025 (MLN): In a bid to enhance transparency and accountability, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has constituted a dedicated Grievance Redressal Committee to examine prosecution cases under Section 37A of the Sales Tax Act, 1990.

The move comes amid increasing concerns from registered taxpayers about the conduct of field formations in arrest cases.

The newly formed committee includes representatives from IR Operations and Legal IR wings of the FBR, along with nominees from the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and relevant Chambers of Commerce. These members will convene fortnightly to review grievances related to recent arrests, providing a formal mechanism for registered persons to contest actions taken under subsections (8) and (9) of Section 37A.

Secretary (ST-Operations) IR will serve in a non-voting capacity, and the committee may co-opt additional business representatives when needed. All recommendations will be forwarded to the Chairman, FBR, who retains the authority to take disciplinary action if any maladministration is confirmed.

This development signals a proactive step by the FBR to strengthen procedural fairness and rebuild trust between the business community and tax authorities.
