March 02, 2026 (MLN): Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) recorded a revenue shortfall of Rs457bn during the first eight months of the current fiscal year (July–February), missing its collection target despite posting over 11% growth compared to the same period last year.

The FBR collected Rs8.121tr against a target of Rs8.55tr, initially reflecting a gap of Rs429bn that later widened to Rs457bn after adjustments, according to official documents as per a press release issued.

In February alone, the tax authority collected Rs944bn compared to a monthly target of Rs1.029tr, resulting in a shortfall of Rs85bn.

During the month, net income tax collection stood at Rs443bn, sales tax revenue reached Rs336bn, customs duty brought in Rs99bn, and federal excise duty generated Rs67bn. The FBR also issued around Rs47bn in refunds in February, taking total refunds for July–February to Rs386bn.

A breakdown of collections for the eight-month period shows income tax receipts at Rs3.956tr against a target of Rs4.098tr, leaving a shortfall of Rs142bn, while sales tax collections totaled Rs3.028tr compared to a target of Rs3.783tr, creating a gap of Rs245bn.

Customs duty collections stood at Rs850bn against a target of Rs898bn, reflecting a shortfall of Rs48bn. However, federal excise duty collections reached Rs532bn, slightly exceeding the target of Rs526bn.

Despite the overall shortfall, the FBR collected Rs787bn more in taxes during July–February than it did in the same period last fiscal year, as authorities said efforts continued to increase revenue collection at a pace higher than economic growth and inflation.
