Electricity supply steady in face of seasonal constraints

March 19, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan’s national power system continued to operate in a stable and efficient manner during February 2026, successfully meeting electricity demand that remained higher than anticipated, the Power Division reported.
Both electricity generation and consumption exceeded
projected levels, reflecting increased utilization of the system.
Seasonal factors influenced the overall energy mix, with
reduced hydropower availability typical for this period and temporary outages
of certain generation units.
Despite these challenges, the system was managed prudently
through established operational protocols, including strict adherence to merit
order dispatch and optimal utilization of available resources.
Notably, no furnace oil-based generation was utilized during
the month, contributing to cost efficiency.
The Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA) for February shows variations
in the fuel mix used for electricity generation, according to the press
release.
FCA is a standard regulatory mechanism determined in
accordance with applicable rules and procedures, ensuring that costs are
adjusted in line with the type of fuel consumed.
Higher electricity consumption also contributes to improved
utilization of system capacity, which can moderate overall tariffs over time.
The Power Division emphasized that the system remained
reliable and responsive, ensuring uninterrupted supply while managing
operational constraints in a balanced and efficient manner.
Sustained generation above forecasts and the absence of
furnace oil-based production reduce overall generation costs, which can help
stabilize electricity tariffs for consumers.
This performance demonstrates the system’s resilience during periods of fluctuating demand and limited hydropower availability.
