Electric patrols hit Islamabad roads

April 7, 2026 (MLN): The government has inducted fifteen environment-friendly, eco-smart electric vehicles into the Islamabad Traffic Police fleet, which aims to enhance traffic management and reduce fuel costs amid rising international fuel prices.

Each vehicle, capable of traveling 350 to 400 kilometers on a full charge, can be fast-charged in 60 to 90 minutes or regularly charged in six to eight hours.

The use of these vehicles is expected to save approximately Rs0.5 million per vehicle per month compared to petrol-powered vehicles, with costs likely to be recovered within 13 to 14 months.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif handed over the vehicles to the Islamabad Traffic Police during a ceremony, urging provincial governments and other law enforcement agencies to follow suit by adopting eco-friendly electric vehicles, according to a press release issued.

Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi also attended the event and presented a model of an electric vehicle to the Prime Minister.

Each vehicle will be staffed by a captain, one male responder, one female responder, and a driver, all provided with special uniforms, and deployed on major city roads to improve traffic flow.
