November 05, 2026 (MLN): The
government has made it clear that exports of surplus sugar will go ahead only
without affecting domestic price stability, with protection of domestic
consumers remaining its primary priority.
Deputy Prime Minister and
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar directed the relevant authorities to maintain
strategic reserves to meet national demand and ensure there is no upward
pressure on retail prices, while stressing that exporting surplus commodities
is essential to strengthen the agricultural economy and earn valuable foreign
exchange.
He made these remarks
while chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on the Export of Surplus
Sugar, said a press release issued.
The committee reviewed
ongoing measures to streamline sugar exports and finalise the administrative,
technical and procedural frameworks.
Current stock levels and
domestic consumption requirements were assessed in detail to ensure exports do
not disturb domestic prices.
Ishaq Dar thanked the
committee members for their contributions and praised their collective effort
in facilitating the smooth export of surplus sugar.
The meeting was attended
by the Ministers for National Food Security and Research and Economic Affairs;
Minister of State for Finance; Adviser to the PM on Industries and Production;
SAPM Tariq Bajwa; Secretaries of Finance, Commerce, Law and Justice, National
