March 30, 2026 (MLN): The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has firmly rejected recent media reports claiming an increase in medicine prices, clarifying that no price hikes have been approved for essential medicines, including insulin and other life-saving drugs.

DRAP explained that the prices highlighted in circulating news stories were misinterpreted.

These figures correspond to Maximum Retail Prices (MRPs) already printed on medicine packaging and insulin delivery devices manufactured in 2024 and 2025, not newly revised rates, according to a press release issued.

The authority emphasized that pharmaceutical companies are strictly prohibited from independently increasing prices of medicines listed under the National Essential Medicines List (NEML).

Addressing concerns about supply, DRAP assured the public that the availability of medicines remains stable.

Following a detailed review of the pharmaceutical supply chain, the authority reported that stocks are sufficient for the coming months.

It also noted that approximately 85% of medicines used in Pakistan are produced locally, minimizing the impact of international disruptions such as Middle Eastern airspace closures or shipping route issues.

To further strengthen supply resilience, DRAP has issued advisories to manufacturers, urging them to adopt contingency measures such as multiple sourcing strategies and geographically diverse supply channels.

These steps are intended to prevent any temporary logistical challenges from turning into shortages.

DRAP reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to safe, effective, and quality-assured therapeutic goods for the people of Pakistan.
