Customs intercepts Rs252.5m smuggled betel nuts

January 01, 2026 (MLN): Customs enforcement authorities seized 30.5 metric tons of smuggled betel nuts of foreign origin along with four passenger buses in an intelligence-based operation near Hub, Balochistan.

The total value of the seized goods and conveyances was estimated at Rs252.5 million, according to the press release.

The seizure was carried out by the Enforcement Collectorate Gadani near Ashok Pump in District Hub following actionable intelligence received through the Chief Collector (Enforcement).

Customs, supported by the Frontier Corps (FC) and local police, intercepted the suspected vehicles during the operation.

The buses were found parked at the reported location. As enforcement teams moved to secure the vehicles, a mob gathered at the site, leading to disorder and a brief scuffle.

The drivers managed to flee the scene amid the disturbance. The situation was later brought under control through coordinated action by Customs, FC, and police personnel.

Given the tense security environment, the seized buses were shifted to the Customs Warehouse in Gadani.

A subsequent examination conducted in the presence of witnesses confirmed the recovery of 30.5 metric tons of smuggled betel nuts concealed in the vehicles. The four passenger buses were seized.

Smuggling of betel nuts remains a persistent issue for authorities due to its impact on tax revenues and the domestic market.

The latest seizure shows ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at curbing illegal trade and protecting the national economy through targeted anti-smuggling operations.
