China’s Wenchang Space site completes 50th launch mission

July 30, 2026 (MLN): China’s Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site has marked its 50th launch mission since becoming operational in 2016 after a Long March-7A rocket successfully placed the Tianlian III-01 satellite into its designated orbit.

The milestone highlights the growing capability of China’s new-generation high-thrust carrier rockets to support regular, high-frequency launch operations.

Located on the southern island province of Hainan, Wenchang is China’s first modern space launch site independently designed and built with an emphasis on environmental protection, according to APP.

The facility is equipped with three multi-azimuth, all-weather launch complexes designed for heavy-lift missions.

Its low-latitude location, wide launch azimuth range, efficient launch capabilities, limited transportation restrictions and designated high-safety rocket-fall zones provide advantages for space missions.

Since beginning operations, technical teams at the site have addressed challenges associated with Hainan’s demanding environment, including high temperatures, high humidity, heavy salt spray and frequent typhoons.

The launch site is scheduled to support the Chang’e-7 lunar exploration mission this year.

It is also expected to play a key role in future major space missions, including China’s manned lunar-landing programs and the maiden launch of heavy-lift carrier rockets, further supporting the country’s space exploration ambitions.
