August 06, 2026 (MLN): China's new energy vehicle (NEV) industry is transitioning from a focus on product exports to advancing localized operations and ecosystem-driven shared development, as the country's automakers move beyond simply loading vehicles onto outbound vessels toward technology licensing, local manufacturing and deep brand building in overseas markets.

China exported 2.615 million NEVs in 2025, up 103.7% year on year, while exports in the first half of 2026 reached 2.355 million units, an increase of 120% year on year, with NEVs emerging as a major driver of the country's export growth, according to official data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), APP reported.

Chinese electric vehicles are increasingly competing on performance, smart features and design rather than price alone.

XPENG Motors delivered over 45,000 overseas vehicles in 2025, up 96% year on year, with Europe contributing nearly half of deliveries and the Asia-Pacific region posting strong growth; the company unveiled a three-year plan in March 2026 to expand into Latin America by 2028.

GAC Group, which considers overseas markets a key growth driver, exported 121,500 vehicles under its own brands in the first half of 2026, up 132% year on year, and is targeting 250,000 exports in 2026 and 1 million by 2030, with a presence across 120 countries and regions.

Leading Chinese automakers, including BYD, GAC and XPENG, are extending their ambitions beyond export volume toward a more sustainable and integrated global model.

BYD has licensed its e-platform 3.0 to Toyota and its blade battery technology to Hyundai, while seven ASEAN countries have adopted its EV charging standard, arrangements that help global automakers accelerate their EV R&D cycles while advancing industry standards across regional markets. XPENG, similarly, has supplied its second-generation autonomous driving system and self-developed Turing AI chip to Volkswagen for global deployment.

Brand experience centers operated by BYD, GAC and XPENG have expanded across commercial districts in Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, reshaping earlier perceptions of Chinese cars as low-cost and low-spec, while the companies have also established service centers and regional parts warehouses in key markets to cut repair times and lower maintenance costs for overseas users.

Beyond branding, automakers have engaged with local communities as well, with GAC Mexico joining the Mexican Electric Mobility Association in February this year to support EV adoption and infrastructure deployment.

Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of the CAAM, attributed the NEV export boom to the country's robust supply chain, economies of scale, and swift iteration of smart features such as autonomous driving and smart cabin interaction, noting that these advantages continuously enhance product competitiveness and help products adapt to the needs of overseas users.
