China sets sights on innovation, emerging industries for 2026–2030

January 21, 2026 (MLN): China is set to roll out a series of initiatives to develop and strengthen emerging and future industries during its 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030).

Zhang Yunming, vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said efforts will focus on fostering new growth drivers in emerging sectors, APP reported.

Expanding the application of advanced manufacturing technologies and products in innovative scenarios, and creating national demonstration bases for emerging industries were also in key highlighted matters.

Regarding future industries, China plans to implement guidelines to promote innovative development, launch strategically significant science and technology projects, and support local governments in cultivating future industries tailored to regional strengths, with further backing from government investment funds.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), emerging industries such as new energy vehicles (NEVs), photovoltaics, low-altitude drones, shipbuilding, and marine engineering equipment experienced rapid growth, boosting the global reputation of “Made in China,” Zhang Yunming, noted.

He highlighted record highs in NEV production and sales, steady growth in the photovoltaic sector, expanded varieties and numbers of civil drones, and notable improvements in both quantity and quality in shipbuilding by 2025.
