China hosts SCO cyber drill to strengthen regional anti-terror cooperation

August 06, 2026 (MLN): Delegations from member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) participated in a joint cyber counter-terrorism exercise in Urumqi, located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The Tianshan-2026 exercise was designed to address emerging terrorist threats in the digital era, with a focus on the growing use of online platforms and advanced technologies by terrorist, separatist and extremist groups.

The drill simulated a scenario in which an international terrorist network used the internet to spread extremist content, recruit operatives and coordinate attacks across SCO member states, according to APP.

During the exercise, participating teams collaborated to detect cyber security threats, trace suspicious online activities and support law enforcement agencies in preventing potential attacks.

The exercise included a series of practical training scenarios aimed at strengthening operational coordination, enhancing information sharing and improving joint response capabilities against cyber terrorism.

Representatives from SCO member states praised the organization of the exercise, describing it as an effective platform for boosting cooperation and improving collective preparedness to tackle cyber threats.

Officials also emphasized that the exercise would help expand practical collaboration among SCO members in combating online terrorism and contribute to safeguarding regional peace, security and stability.
