July 09, 2026 (MLN): Cambodia has inaugurated a 45-kilometre section of the expanded National Road 7, a China-funded infrastructure project aimed at improving transport connectivity, supporting trade, and promoting tourism in the country's central region.
The upgraded stretch extends from the Skun Market roundabout
to the Kizuna Bridge roundabout in Kampong Cham town and has been widened from
two lanes to four lanes, according to APP.
Prime Minister Hun Manet said the expanded road will improve
public transportation, strengthen commercial activity, enhance logistics, and
support the movement of agricultural and industrial goods between the central
and northeastern provinces.
He added that the project is expected to accommodate growing
traffic volumes while contributing to regional economic development.
The road is also expected to promote tourism in Kampong Cham
province by improving access to its historical, cultural, and natural
attractions.
Hun Manet described the project as another example of
cooperation between Cambodia and China and expressed appreciation for China's
continued support for Cambodia's infrastructure and economic development.
According to the prime minister, an assessment estimated the
project would generate an economic internal rate of return of 15.27%,
supporting long-term national economic growth.
Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea said the
project was completed in 27 months by China Road and Bridge Corporation using a
preferential loan provided by the Chinese government.
He said the upgraded road will facilitate regional trade and
improve the transportation of major agricultural products, including rubber,
rice, pepper, cassava, cashew nuts, corn, sugarcane, tobacco, livestock, and
fresh produce, while strengthening Cambodia's logistics network and economic
development.
