Banks to remain open for Govt tax collection

January 31, 2026 (MLN):  The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has directed branches of all commercial banks nationwide to remain open today, January 31, 2026, to facilitate the collection of government duties and taxes.

The decision, made at the request of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), aims to support taxpayers in making over-the-counter (OTC) payments.

Designated branches including National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) branches handling customs collections were to operate with extended hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, according to a press release issued by SBP.

Banks have further been advised to keep the concerned branches operational for as long as needed to ensure smooth special clearing for government transactions processed through the National Institutional Facilitation Technologies (NIFT) system.

Additionally, financial institutions are required to maintain uninterrupted availability of digital payment services such as internet banking, mobile applications, ATMs, and other online platforms to help taxpayers pay government dues without disruption.

The step is intended to streamline tax payments and provide added convenience for individuals and businesses in meeting their obligations on time.
