Bahria Town faces near-total shutdown, Malik Riaz urges dialogue, arbitration

August 5, 2025 (MLN): A near-total shutdown of operations nationwide has gripped Bahria Town, Pakistan’s largest real estate developer, following what the organization describes as intense and unprecedented pressure from government agencies.
In a series of public messages shared by founder Malik Riaz on X (formerly Twitter), the company outlined the arrest of staff, freezing of bank accounts, and seizure of vehicles, all leading to a collapse in service delivery and employee compensation.
“Our cash flow has been completely destroyed,” Riaz stated. “It has become impossible to provide daily services, and we are unable to pay the salaries of our tens of thousands of staff.”
The impact so far:
More than 50,000 employees affected nationwide
Trillions of rupees in citizen investments frozen across Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad
Commercial projects worth hundreds of billions stalled midway
Thousands of families caught in uncertainty and psychological distress
Malik Riaz voiced sorrow over the suffering of residents and stakeholders, noting Bahria Town’s two-decade contributions to Pakistan, world-class housing developments, significant job creation, and billions paid to the national exchequer.
He appealed for a constructive path forward:
“We assure you that we will participate in any arbitration and implement its decision 100 percent,” he said. “If the arbitration requires payment, we will ensure it is made, God willing.”
The message concluded with a declaration of resilience and service, asserting that despite the challenges, Bahria Town will not “leave quietly,” and remains committed to supporting Pakistan through passion and sacrifice.
