August 25, 2026 (MLN): Asian markets traded mixed on Tuesday as investors remained cautious amid escalating Middle East tensions and fresh U.S. sanctions targeting Iran and its economic partners.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.55%, while the broader Topix index edged slightly lower. South Korea’s Kospi fell 2.37%, with the Kosdaq declining 1.23%. In contrast, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.29%, according to CNBC.

Earlier futures had indicated a weaker start for Japan and Australia, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index futures pointed to a positive opening.

Investor sentiment was weighed down by Washington's rollout of a global sanctions initiative aimed at entities accused of supporting Tehran's economy. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that those maintaining economic ties with Iran could face the consequences of increased isolation.

The cautious tone followed a mixed session on Wall Street, where the S&P 500 fell 0.28% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.76%, pressured mainly by weakness in technology and semiconductor stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, added 140.15 points, or 0.26%.

U.S. equity futures were largely unchanged in early trading, with investors awaiting Nvidia's quarterly results and key inflation data later this week.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields moved lower following reports that the Treasury Department could use funds from its General Account to expand government bond purchases. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield declined by more than three basis points to 4.7%.

Markets are also awaiting consumer confidence data on Tuesday, followed by Nvidia's earnings and the July personal consumption expenditure inflation reading.

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh is also scheduled to speak at the central bank's annual Jackson Hole symposium on Friday.

Investors are expected to closely monitor these developments for further signals on the outlook for global equities, inflation and the future path of U.S. interest rates.
