October 07, 2026 (MLN): Asian markets opened mixed on Wednesday, with investors weighing record highs on Wall Street against elevated U.S. bond yields and ongoing geopolitical concerns.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 was little changed at the open, while the
broader Topix gained 0.18%. South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.57%, while the Kosdaq
declined 0.27%.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.13%. Hong Kong’s Hang
Seng Index was down 0.65%, while mainland Chinese markets remained closed for
the Golden Week holiday, according to CNBC.
Nikkei 225 futures pointed to a stronger opening, with
Chicago and Osaka contracts at 71,020 and 70,070, respectively, against the
index’s previous close of 70,683.98. Hang Seng futures stood at 24,272,
slightly below its previous close of 24,280.56.
The mixed Asian session came after the S&P 500 and
Nasdaq Composite ended at fresh records on Wall Street. Meanwhile, U.S.
Treasury yields eased on Tuesday after climbing steadily since late February,
when the U.S.-Israel war on Iran began.
The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.286% after reaching
its highest level since April 2002 on Monday. The 30-year yield was around
5.661%, while the two-year yield eased to 4.798%.
Investors remained concerned about weaker foreign demand for
U.S. government debt amid geopolitical tensions. Investor Ray Dalio told
Bloomberg that China was reluctant to continue accumulating U.S. debt,
highlighting the challenges created by the creditor-debtor relationship between
the two countries.
Energy prices provided some support to equities, with both
WTI crude oil and global benchmark Brent closing Tuesday’s session less than 1%
higher.
Market participants are now awaiting the minutes of the
Federal Reserve’s September meeting, due Wednesday, for further clues on
policymakers’ assessment of economic conditions and the outlook for interest
rates.
