Asian markets mostly higher, Nikkei rises on Wall Street gains

October 06, 2026 (MLN): Asian markets opened mostly higher on Tuesday, tracking gains on Wall Street where AI-linked stocks pushed the Nasdaq Composite to a fresh record, while elevated U.S. Treasury yields kept investors cautious.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.22% at the open, while the broader Topix gained 0.26%. South Korea’s Kospi slipped 0.15%, although the Kosdaq advanced 1.91%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.36%, according to CNBC.

Later in the session, the Nikkei was up 0.29%, Kospi fell 0.23%, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.53%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rose 0.95%. Mainland Chinese markets remained closed for the Golden Week holiday.

Nikkei futures pointed to further gains, with Chicago and Osaka contracts at 70,220 and 70,180, respectively, against the previous close of 69,946.86. Hang Seng futures stood at 24,266, compared with the previous close of 24,040.34.

Oil prices declined overnight, with crude futures falling around 1.9% to $100.32 per barrel, while U.S. crude dropped about 1.8% to $89.43 per barrel.

U.S. Treasury yields remained in focus, with the 10-year yield surpassing 5.3%, reaching levels last seen in 2002. The 30-year yield also crossed 5.7%, its highest level in 24 years.

Investors are now awaiting minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, due Wednesday, for further clues on policymakers’ interest-rate outlook.
