Work on CPEC Gwadar Projects in full swing – Power and water projects at top priority

A session of National Assembly’s Standing Committee for Planning & Development was held today under Abdul Majeed. The committee reviewed the pace of Federal Development Programme 2017 – 18. The briefing also reviewed the projects being carried out under China Pakistan Economic Corridor umbrella.

Planning and Development officials briefed the committee that, 300 MW Gwadar Power Plant is expected to be inaugurated during the year 2018, the project is currently under tariff determination phase. Furthermore, to provide water to the developing city of Gwadar, committee was briefed that work on Gwadar Water Project worth Rs. 11.2 billion is currently in the first phase of development. Initial costs for water supply during the first phase of the Water Project is expected to be somewhere around Rs. 3.8 billion.

The committee also asked for details on the investigation of Fire incident that burned the newly constructed CPEC – Centre for Excellence. Planning Commission officials informed the Committee that the reason for fire in CPEC Centre for Excellence could not be investigated. The committee was informed that, despite a lengthy investigation, there have been no further developments to ascertain the cause of fire.

The fire incident took place in Islamabad’s Red District, during the month of September last year. The fire caused damaged to more than 27 company offices apart from the CPEC Centre. There were more than 20 company offices in IT Software Park, Planning Commission Officials informed the Standing Committee. The NA Committee was assured that the fire caused no damage to CPEC records and documents.

Standing Committee also pointed out the bulging costs of the work on CPEC Centre of Excellence which began in 2016. The committee showed its objections on the cost for project exceeding Rs. 1.20 billion, which have already been spent on the project.

NA Standing Committee also expressed their reservation regarding the vacancy of CPEC Project Director, who has not been appointed since last two and a half years. The officials informed the Committee members that in the absence of Project Director, CPEC and all relevant projects are currently being monitored by Deputy Project Director, Mr. Hassan Dawood.

The officials informed the NA Standing Committee that Prime Minister will approve the appointment of CPEC Project Director.
