Weekly SPI increases by 1.83%

August 26, 2022 (MLN): The Weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the Combined Group increased by 1.83% during the week ended Aug 25, 2022, according to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.

While, year-on-year, the SPI surged by 44.58% compared to the corresponding period last year.

The Combined Index was at 219.97 compared to 216.02 on Aug 18, 2022 while the index was recorded at 152.14 a year ago, on Aug 26, 2021.

As per the PBS inflation report, this increase was attributed to the jump in the price of essential food items.

Out of the 51 monitored items, the average price of 23 items increased including tomatoes (43.09%), onions (41.13%), potatoes (6.32%), eggs (3.43%), garlic (2.23%), powdered milk (1.53%) and pulse mash (1.12%), non-food items, cigarettes (2.26%) and LPG (1.95%).

On the other hand, 7 items observed a decline in prices that include pulse masoor (1.18%), vegetable ghee 1kg (1.00%), vegetable ghee 2.5kg (0.82%), bananas (0.61%), cooking oil 5 litre (0.51%), sugar (0.28%) and mustard oil (0.07%). While 21 items registered no change during the week.

The weekly SPI percentage change by income groups showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging between 1.53% and 2.66%.

The lowest income group witnessed a weekly increase of 2.66% while the highest income group recorded an increase of 1.53%.

On a yearly basis, analysis of SPI change across different income segments showed that SPI increased across all quantiles ranging between 37.54% and 45.28%.

Yearly SPI for the lowest income group increased by 37.54% while the highest income group recorded an increase of 45.28%.

The average price of Sona urea stood at Rs.2410 per 50 kg bag which is 0.86% lower than last week’s price and 35.39% higher when compared to last year.

Meanwhile, the average Cement price was recorded at Rs.1035 per 50 kg bag, which is 0.29% lower than the previous week and 53.79% higher than prices last year.
