September 04, 2022 (MLN): The economic roundup contains the recent economic developments and financial data releases over the course of the week to keep an eye on next week’s trend.

  • The Weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the combined group increased by 1.31% during the week ended September 01, 2022, while the SPI increased by 45.5% compared to the corresponding period from last year. 
  • Pakistan's merchandise trade deficit for the month of August 2022 clocked in at $3.53 billion compared to a deficit of $2.73bn in the preceding month, expanded by 29% MoM.
  • Pakistan’s oil marketing companies (OMCs)’ sales declined in August 2022 by 22% YoY to 1.52 million tons (MTs), compared to 1.96 MTs in August 2021.
  • Pakistan's yearly inflation rate (New Base 2015-16) in August 2022 jumped to 27.26% YoY- the highest since 1975 compared to 24.9% YoY in July 2022 and 8.4% YoY in August 2021
  • The total liquid foreign exchange reserves held by the country decreased by $118.1million or 0.87% WoW to stand at $13.4 billion during the week ended on August 19, 2022, compared to $13.52bn in the previous week.
  • The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Wednesday received proceeds of $1.16 billion under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Pakistan. 
  • The federal government increased the price of petroleum products by up to Rs10.92 per litre for the next fortnight.
  • The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has collected net revenue of Rs489 billion during August 2022, against a target of Rs483bn. These collections are the highest ever in the month of August.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $3 million grant to support Pakistan’s emergency relief efforts amid widespread floods across the country.
  • Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Syed Amin Ul Haque launched Pakistan National ICT Development White Paper aimed at identifying gaps and seeking suggestions on modern requirements.
