May 24, 2019 (MLN): A total of 292.4 thousand tonnes of urea was sold in the first month of Kharif 2019, i.e. April 2019, which bring this fiscal year’s total urea sales to a hefty total of 4.7 million tonnes.

As per records maintained by the National Fertilizer Development Centre (NFDC), this month’s urea sales have diminished by 22% as compared to the same period last year as it was previously recorded at 375.5 thousand tonnes in April 2018.

The biggest portion of overall offtake in April was sold in Punjab where around 198 thousand tonnes were consumed. Meanwhile, the second largest portion was sold in Sindh where 64.7 thousand tonnes of urea was consumed.

Demand for urea has fallen in all the provinces when compared to that in the corresponding period of last year. Consumption in Punjab declined by 23% while that in Sindh fell by 20%.

On the whole, 629.6 thousand tonnes of urea was available for consumption this month, out of which 494.8 thousand tonnes were produced locally and 134.8 thousand tonnes were left over from the previous month.

Since the total consumption in April was 292.4 thousand tonnes, over 337 thousand tonnes are now left for use at a later date.
