May 13, 2025 (MLN): The significant development potential of Balochistan was emphasized during a meeting between the Country Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, alongside her delegation, in Islamabad.

The discussions were centered around strengthening the partnership between the Government of Pakistan and UNOPS, with a focus on trade, infrastructure, and inclusive economic growth.

Minister Jam Kamal Khan highlighted Balochistan’s untapped opportunities in various sectors such as agriculture, specifically date farming, fisheries, and mineral resources.

He assured that the federal government, in close cooperation with the provincial government, is working to improve infrastructure across the region to create jobs, empower women, and uplift communities in border areas.

“Balochistan holds immense potential for trade and development,” stated Minister Kamal Khan.

“We are committed to unlocking this potential through strategic investments in infrastructure, logistics, and value chains, with a strong emphasis on regional inclusivity and sustainability.”

The minister also expressed appreciation for the long-standing support from UNOPS, particularly its contributions in providing essential services in remote and challenging areas.

He commended UNOPS’ efforts in solar energy for schools, water quality improvement, emergency flood response, and capacity building for law enforcement agencies, according to the press release issued.

The UNOPS Country Director acknowledged the government’s support and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Commerce and other national stakeholders.

She mentioned ongoing and upcoming projects, including infrastructure development in the health sector, plastic waste management, and the creation of climate-resilient training facilities for law enforcement personnel.

Additionally, she emphasized that UNOPS would align its efforts with Pakistan’s Vision 2025 and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023–2027.

Minister Jam Kamal Khan proposed the establishment of a dedicated coordination mechanism between the Ministry of Commerce and UNOPS to identify and implement priority projects.

He also highlighted the need to engage women and small enterprises in export-driven sectors such as textiles, IT, handicrafts, agriculture, livestock, and dates.

The meeting concluded with both parties expressing a shared commitment to advancing a development agenda focused on supporting underserved regions like Balochistan.

The minister concluded, “We believe this partnership with UNOPS is vital in fostering export-led growth and inclusive development, especially in areas that need it most.”
